Photos - How to manage in Windows XP

These instructions are designed to help you Save, Organize, Copy, Move, Delete, Re-Name, and Print photo's using Windows XP.

Finding The Files:

  1. Click Start then My Pictures.
  2. Find the picture(s) you want to save by clicking on the proper link under the "Other Places" section of the left side of the page. Example, if you are trying to save pictures from a floppy disk you would click "My Computer", then double click the "3-1/2 Floppy A drive"

At that point a box will pop up showing you the files on the floppy disk. You should see thumbnails of the pictures on the disk if they are *.bmp, *.gif, or *.jpg type pictures. Each picture will have a file name under it.

If for some reason you do not see the picture thumbnails click the File View icon and click "Thumbnails". You could also use the menu bar at the top of the page and to View, Thumbnails.

Saving, Copying, or Moving the Files:

  1. Once you have found the files you want to save, move, or copy, click the file once to highlight/select it.

  2. If you want to save, move, or copy more than 1 file, simply hold down your keyboard "Ctrl" key and click on another file/picture. While holding down the Ctrl key you can click on as many pictures as you'd like. In the example below, I have selected 3 files/photos.

If you click on a picture without having the Ctrl key held down you will select one file/picture, all other files/pictures will be released.
  3. Once you have the files/pictures selected you can decide what you want to do with them. Click the option from the File and Folder Task options to the left. (You can also click on one of the selected files with your right mouse button and choose from the pop-up menu with your left mouse button).

    Left Menu Options

    Right Mouse Click Pop-Up Optoins

MOVE OPTION - This will move/save the files/pictures from their current location to another location that you choose. The files/pictures will no longer be where they are now. Example: If the files are on a floppy disk and you choose Move, the files will no longer be on the floppy disk.
COPY OPTION - This will copy/save the files/pictures to another location that you choose. They will still be at the current location when you finish. Example: If they are being copied from a disk, they will still be on the disk when you get done. The copy action will not remove the files/pictures from the disk.
PUBLISH TO THE WEB - This will send a copy of your pictures to the internet. You will have to have some kind of photo web service set-up to use this function. You can get this service through Yahoo, MSN, etc.
E-MAIL OPTION - This will load the files/pictures into an e-mail message. You will need to have some kind of e-mail software set-up on your computer like Outlook Express, Outlook, etc. This will not work if you are using a web based e-mail service like Juno, etc. (Note: When e-mailing photos from your folders, windows will ask if you want the photos re-sized, unless you have a good reason you don't want them resized choose "Make all my pictures smaller". This will make them download faster).
DELETE OPTION - Will do just that, delete the files/pictures from the disk or folder.

  4. Lets choose the copy option. The Copy Items box will pop up. At this point you need to decide where you want to copy the files/pictures to. In the example below, I have selected to copy the files/pictures in the TEMPPHOTOS folder.

You can copy them into an existing folder or make a new folder to copy them into. (Note: You should always copy files/photos into your My Documents\My Pictures folder, even if you make a new folder). Find the folder that you want to copy the files/pictures to and click on it so that it turns blue.
  5. Click the Copy button and your pictures will be copied there. If you want to put them in a new folder you will have to decide which folder you want to put your new folder in. Click on the main folder that you want your new folder in (it will turn blue), then click the Make New Folder button. When click that button, it will make a new folder and place it in the folder you had selected.

Once the folder appears you can start typing the new folder name. I called my new folder TEMPPHOTOS. Type the new folder name and press the Enter key on your keyboard to set the new name. It will turn blue and is now ready to copy your selected files/photos into it. Click Copy.

You can E-Mail, Print, Edit, etc., from the My Pictures folder.

E-MAILING - When e-mailing pictures, Windows XP will ask if you want to make the pictures smaller or keep the original size. If you choose the "Make pictures smaller" option it will compress the photos and make them fit in most e-mail boxes. This will also make the photos easier to down load (faster).

PRINTING - Choosing to print will launch a print wizard. Click through step by step, it's really easy.
