Motor mount, right side, Volvo S70, replacement instructions

One of the most common motor mount failures on the S70 and 850 has got to be the lower right engine mount (at the front of the motor). It is located just behind the right front tire and can be seen by removing the nut that holds the splash guard in place and pulling it back. Every time you remove that tire you should check that mount. You should also check it when the timing belt is done. If you do not do those jobs yourself, you can ask your mechanic to check it for you. The photo of the one above is totally torn through. My guess would be that is the only time they get replaced. The job can be done in 1 hour.

When these mounts wear down or tear through, the bottom of the mount rest of the frame of the car and transmit vibration into the car. You can usually feel the vibration at low speeds or at idle. The mount actually has an awesome design and the motor only moves about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch when the mount has totally torn through, thus limiting the engine travel/movement.

Tools Needed:

Extra jack Torque wrench
14 mm Socket, 3/8" 17 mm Socket, 3/8"
10 mm Socket, 3/8" Ratchet wrench, 3/8"
Breaker bar Gloves
Anti-seize Short ratchet extension, 3/8"
Short ratchet swivel, 3/8" Pry bar
17 mm box end wrench (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Park the car on a flat surface.

  2. Set the parking brake.

  3. Jack the car.

  4. Remove the tire.

  5. It would be best to lower the car on to a jack stand. As low as you can to the level position.

  6. Remove the splash guard nut and pull back the splash guard. You will be able to see the mount.

  7. Remove the top side bolt. It is 14 mm, there are 2 of them. This will make it easier to raise the motor to get the forward frame bolt access.

  8. Remove the rear mount bolt that connect to the frame. The frame bolts are 17 mm and there are 2 of them. They were real tight, I had to use the breaker bar to get them loose. If you have a 17 mm box end wrench you may be able to get the forward bolt out at this time.

  9. To remove the forward frame bolt, jack the motor a little to lift the mount up just enough to get the forward side mount bolt raise off the mount so it can be removed. As soon as this bolt is removed, lower the jack to relieve pressure off the spare jack.
WARNING: I used the spare jack with a flat base on it to raise/jack the motor up a little. I carefully placed it under the oil pan (passenger side edge) and jacked it up slowly, just enough to get the lower side bolt out of the mount. It would be a good idea to put a 1x4 (6 inches long or so) or 2x4 between the jack and oil pan, I put it on the edge of the pan. If you lift the center of the oil pan you will likely crack it also do not lift the motor up to high and jack the entire car up with it putting to much pressure on the oil pan you will likely damage the pan and/or the seal. You may want to find some other way to raise the motor a little.

  10. Remove the mount and wipe off the frame where the mount was sitting.

NOTE: Photos of good and bad mounts.

  11. Put the new mount in place and install the 2 frame bolts finger tight, you will likely have to raise the motor a little to get the forward side bolt in if you lowered it since removal.

  12. Raise the motor again, just enough to get the side bolts in and quickly install them finger tight.
Warning: Do not damage the oil pan.

  13. Torque all 4 bolts to 37 ft. lbs.

  14. Secure the splash guard.

  15. Install the wheel. Be sure to use anti-seize compound on your wheel lug nuts.
