Assembly Instructions For The
Toshiba Satellite A65 Laptop Computer
These instructions will guide you through several aspects of
replacing parts on the Toshiba Satellite A65 laptop computer.
You will need the following tools:
- Small standard tip screw driver.
- Small cross tip screw driver.
- Standard paper clip.
- Shut down the computer.
- Remove the battery. Turn the computer upside down, release the 2
lock latches, then unlatch the larger center battery latch to
release it.
- Turn the computer back over and remove the power button panel.
Press on the back of the monitor hinge covers to release the clips
and lift up. You will need to slip the small standard tip screw driver under the
hinge cover and pry it up. Once you can get a grip on it, slowly and
carefully lift it up with a twisting motion (twisting it away from
the rear edge to the front edge). Several clips will release, lift
it away.
- Remove the keyboard. Remove the 2 screws that hold the rear edge
in place. One by the F1 key and the other by the Window key (next to
Pause Break). Once you remove those 2 screws, lift the rear edge of
the keyboard and lay it on the palm rest of the computer.
- Release the keyboard ribbon from it's clip and set the keyboard
aside.
- Release the touch pad ribbon next to the keyboard connection.
(That ribbon also controls the lights at the front edge).
- Remove the monitor by removing the 4 screws in the top side of
the hinges (2 on each side).
- Remove the screw that holds the monitor cable in place.
- Unclip the ribbon cable.
- Flip the computer over and remove the last 2 screws (1 on each
end) that hold the monitor in place.
Before you turn it back over to lift off, you will need to unfasten
the antenna wires.
- Remove the Wireless card cover from the bottom of the computer.
- Disconnect the small wires that connect to the wireless card.
- Turn the computer on it's side and carefully remove the monitor
from the base. You may need to feed the wireless card wires through
the small hole in the base.
- While you have access to the top of the computer, disconnect the
touch pad connection ribbon from the mother board.
- To get the computer apart and access the mother board, you will
need to remove the CD drive. So, flip the computer over and remove
the 1 screw that holds the CD drive in place.
- Using a paper clip or something similar, eject the CD drive by
pressing on the release button on the drive faceplate.
- Once the drive pops out, slowly slide the drive out and remove
it from the base of the computer.
- Now you can remove all the screws that connect the top and
bottom of the base together. They are found on the screw layout
page. You will need to remove the CD drive to get all the screws
apart.
- Once you have all the screws out, you can not separate the top
and bottom of the computer base. You should be careful not to damage
the following parts because the are attached to both the bottom and
top. Both speakers and the switch that senses when the lid (monitor)
is closed. It is best to have the bottom side up when separating the
2 parts. I usually allow the speakers to removed from the underside
of the palm rest and un-plug the lid switch wires from the mother
board.
- Once you have total access to the mother board you can remove
the processor by loosening the 4 screws and remove the 1 screw that
hold the heat sink in place.
- You can remove the mother board by removing the 3 screws that
hold it in place. One of the screws is located under the hard drive
so it will need to be removed first.
- When lifting the mother board from the base, be careful not to
break the latch near the volume know. It helps to push in the
release button for the PCMCIA card slot when getting it loose from
that end.
